Gardening on Sugar Mountain

We have many plans and dreams for our homestead.  Alternative farming and sustainable agriculture are two terms we are becoming very familiar with.  As we only have 58 acres, and this is split up into individual community parcels, we have to use alternative farming methods.  Sustainable agriculture is that which renews itself, thereby sustaining itself -- and us.  In the midst of this learning, we have come across tons of info and developed a few plans of our own.  Here are some links to those pages.  We've included some really good recipes and some pretty pages too.  Hope you enjoy!

In fall 2002, we got a few things we had been wanting for our garden, including a Mantis tiller and an Excalibur dehydrator.  In spring of 2003, we dedicated most of our time to putting a new roof on our house, remodeling inside the house, and redoing kennel pens, so we really ended up with just flower bed gardens once again, like 2002.  However, we did add on to our orchard.  In 2004, though, we added more in the way of "edible landscaping", raised bed gardening, and container gardening, and utilized all 3 methods.  Part of this is in trying to make our gardens workable within my capabilities, so that I can at least help with weeding, planting, etc.

Eventually, if this all works out the way we want it to, our front yard will be turned into "edible landscaping" with raised beds and container gardening woven throughout the front yard and orchard space; we'll have our terraces and the jungle reclaimed; and we'll move some flowers, bulbs, shrubs, etc., from the back yard to incorporate into our front yard landscaping.  In 2005, we're also taking back our original garden patch with some whole new methods.  More on that as it gets there.

Our food preservation section has some of our favorite recipes for canning and dehydrating.  We'll be adding to this page right along.
