Reclaiming the Jungle - Before

As part of our 2004 projects, we started reclaiming "the jungle".  There are terraces between the cabin and the house, which had grown up into a jungle.  There is a pretty little rock garden at one end of these terrace, and we have been working on pulling saplings, etc., out of this area.  There are a lot of other areas we will be planting flowers in and landscaping in the future.  We have plans for a nice rose garden area also to be planted this year.

This is part of the jungle we have been working on reclaiming.  These are the "Before" photos.

Our Jungle.

Here, you can't see the terraces for the jungle.

Russian Olive

In this part, a Russian Olive takes over!

Russian Olive

This is the same Russian olive from the cabin side.

First terrace

After a little work, the first terrace starts to take shape and become visible.

Rock Garden

Here's the rock garden from above in 2004. Can you see it?

Second Terrace

A view of the second terrace, 2004. Most of the saplings & the big cedar will come out.

Bridal wreath

This is growing in the puppy pen. Eventually we will take starts of this and move it completely out of the pen. However, right now, it provides shade for the puppies.

Dust screen

This hedgerow grows along the western edge of our property, providing a good dust screen and allowing our goats in the pasture a bit of screening from the road.

It's a bit overgrown, but

it's pretty. We've been sharing out starts of these with friends & neighbors. We'll be moving starts to other placed on our property for use as privacy hedge. The country trims it on this side in the summer too!

Iris & Daffodil Garden

On the Northwest corner, there's an iris & daffodil garden, walled off by these rocks.

Yucca.

We have several of the yucca plants, one at each end of this flower bed, for example. Yucca is good for making soap, and it's a nice, spiky landscaping item.

Redbud in bloom

This redbud will stay in the jungle. It grows from the second terrace along with a pretty dogwood in there.

Overgrown rock garden

The rock garden's pretty overgrown here, taken in 2004, but the tulips were still blooming and pretty in it.

Terrace jungle

Another shot of the terraces. The terraces are hard to see in these "before photos".

Wild Grape Vines

Note the masses of wild grape vines. These are hard to kill, hard to get rid of, and they try to kill everything else out, often succeeding.

Violets

In between the jungle and the house, the hillside has a carpet of yellow, white, and purple violets.

Windflowers

More violets are scattered among the Grecian windflowers.

Good Grapes!

Here are the kind of grapes we WANT to keep!

Pear tree blooming

The pear trees were blooming nicely too. These photos were all taken as "before" photos in 2004.
