Sugar Mountain, The Old Homestead
![]()
![]() This is the "old homestead", the original Sugar Mountain location. There we were in the Ozarks, way out in the middle of nowhere. Welcome to our old homestead on Sugar Mountain. To us, homesteading is not just a word, but a way of life. It's a means of being independent and self-sufficient. We also like the peace and quiet of the country, the rural life, living in a remote and isolated place. Do we get lonely? No, we don't. We love the homesteading life. We didn't become homesteaders because we couldn't make it in the city. We're homesteaders because we tried the city, and we didn't like it. We both grew up in rural areas, and homesteading is and was a means of getting back to our roots. We first looked at this place in February of 1998 on Valentine's Day. (Romantic, huh?) We found it through the help of a real estate friend of ours, Ken Peters, who is now with the Remax Agency. Ken is a multi-listing agent, so he can take you to see any property in the lake area listed by anybody. We knew this was the right property for us, it was "the one" right from the very beginning. After about 3 months of negotiating and with LOTS of help from Ken Peters, our offer was finally accepted. Even in the midst of changing real estate companies, Ken stuck with us and helped us throughout the whole of our months of negotiations, meeting with the sellers and a surveyor, and throughout our entire closing. He has helped a few of our other friends find their dream homes at the Lake area also. On July 1, 1998, we closed on our initial 5.1 acres of prime Missouri Ozark land on top of the second-tallest mountain around (but the tallest is only 3 feet higher). On July 11, 1998, we left Iowa with the biggest truck Ryder had for rent. In October of 1999, we closed on enough additional acreage to bring us up to 42 acres. In November of 2003, we purchased another 16 acres, bringing us up to 58 acres for our home and community. From that Ryder trip in July of 1998, right up to the double U-Haul trip in August of 2005, we lived and worked at the old homestead. If you tour through our site, you'll discover what we accomplished while we were there, why we decided to sell, how we found our new homestead, moved our entire homesteading community, and set up the "new and improved" Sugar Mountain in the southern Missouri Ozarks by reading our homesteading diary. You can see our progress and read about how we moved an entire homestead and an entire community! If you are interested in getting out of the rat race and/or moving away from the city, you can get some tips on homesteading by going to our Homesteading Tips page. There are more links below that may be of interest to you if you are as interested in homesteading, country living, alternative farming, sustainable agriculture, etc. as we are.
