Working at home, Owning your own Business, Being your own Boss

Working for yourself isn't always what it is cracked up to be. You definitely have to be a self-starter. If you are sick or just need the day off because of other pressing business, there aren't any sick days or vacation pay to fall back on. If you don't work, you don't get paid. It is, however, better than working for someone else. You can set your own hours and decide which jobs you want to take, which ones you won't, and when you want a little time off. It has been our experience, however, that time off is a rare thing when you own your own business. After many years of working for other people, we both decided that this was what we wanted to do. It may not be as secure as other types of jobs; but, then again, it may be more secure. You just never know.

Sugar Mountain Drone was a painting contractor for years.  He recently retired from that.  He is working full time in our kennel business now.  He does the main bulk of the work required to take care of the dogs and keep the kennels clean and well-maintained.  He also handles the shots, wormers, etc., to keep the dogs and puppies healthy.

I am retired now also, but I used to work at home on my computer, doing medical transcription. I went to college to learn how to do that, and I had 15 years of experience at it. It is not an easy job. I loved working at home, because I didn't have to get dressed up to go to work, drive or commute anywhere in bad weather, and I could be here at home if the kids needed me. The equipment was an expensive outlay of capital at the beginning, but I believe it was worth it.  I worked as a remote employee for 2 remote services after we moved here (for over 2 years).  I had been offered my old job back as a transcriptionist at the local hospital more than once, but I wanted to work at home.  When they finally got to the point of testing their remote transcription positions and opening them up for offer, they called me again.  I accepted.  I was a p.r.n. employee for almost a year and a half, and then finally went full-time.  I was then full-time for over 2 years.  The main advantage there was insurance, health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, and disability insurance.   To find out more about how I became a medical transcriptionist, and working at home as an MT, click the link below.

I also help out with the kennel business.  I am responsible for some of the advertising, sales, and paperwork.
