Pomeranian Colors

It takes a while to learn the different colors of Pomeranians, but I think we are learning.    The Pomeranian color section is a work in progress.  As soon as I get photos organized and time to get it all together, we will have photos of puppies of all colors, from tiny to adult, including "puppy ugly" stages.  The American Pomeranian Club also has a good color section, although they don't show any photos of "puppy uglies".  Pomeranian puppies change so much from what they start out as to what they end up as during their growth.  While the APC photos are wonderful, and the Pomeranians in them are gorgeous, they are mostly all of championship winners.  While we like to think of our Pom babies as "champion" pets, they do not necessarily look like "show dogs" all the time.  We do try to show in our photos what the Pomeranian colors look like, in all their various stages.  On this page, we'll start with red, orange, red/sable, and orange/sable.  Scroll down to the bottom of the page for links to other colors.  Please click on the thumbnails below to see full-sized photos.

Red/Sable & Orange/Sable

Orange/sable on left; Red/sable on right.

This pair is a good example of changes during growth. At age almost 4 weeks, the female on the left will be orange/sable. The male on the right will be red/sable.

Red/sable male, age 7-1/2 weeks.

A month later, at age 7 1/2 weeks, the red/sable male looked like this.

Orange/sable female at 7-1/2 weeks.

The orange sable female looked like this. Notice how the colors have lightened up.

Orange/sable at 11 weeks.

By 11 weeks old, the orange/sable female looked like this. Notice the prominent orange now seen on her face and ears.

Orange/sable at 11 weeks.

She is also at the beginning stages now of what Pomeranian owners come to know as "puppy uglies". Female poms seem to do this worse than males, but they actually lose their baby fur in preparation for their adult coats.

Orange/sable, age 14 weeks.

Notice how her fur has thinned out and how the colors have changed over the months. She started out very dark in color, and now the orange is much more prominent.

Teddy, our orange/sable male at about 6 months old, down in the bottom right corner of photo.

Teddy started out as a puppy with just the tiniest bit of "sable" or black on his tail & back. As an adult, he really doesn't have any "sable" left in his coat. His coat is orange, and his undercoat is cream.

Orange/sable adult male, Teddy at 2 years old.

Black female is Vixen at about 12 weeks.

Orange/sable male, Teddy, at age 6, with full coat.

Teddy has what is known as a "triple-coat".

Red/sable male adult, Li'l Jobe.

He has a cream undercoat, but you can see the sable shading on his top coat.

Red/sable adult male.

Li'l Jobe is pictured here with a blue/tan female (Peggy).

Adult red/sable female, Miss Lily Mae.

Here is Mom's Miss Lily. She has a cream undercoat also with very little "sable" actually visible left on her.
